Candidiasis-causing Candida sp. forms biofilms with various oral bacteria in the dentures of the elderly, making it harder to kill and remove the microorganism due to the extracellular polymeric substances. We found that biofilms on dentures can effectively be removed by immersion in an unsaturated fatty acid salt solution. Using optical coherence tomography to observe the progression of biofilm removal by the fatty acid salt solution, we were able to determine that the removal was accompanied by the production of gaps at the interface between the biofilm and denture resin. Furthermore, microstructural electron microscopy observations and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry elucidated the site of action, revealing that localization of the fatty acid salt at the biofilm/denture-resin interface is an important factor.

RESUMOA tecnologia assistiva é um recurso indispensável para pessoas portadoras de deficiência, visto o benefício auferido na qualidade de vida e inclusão na sociedade desses indivíduos. Por meio da análise cienciométrica, o objetivo do presente estudo foi de avaliar a produção científica sobre a temática nos últimos oito anos, nas bases Scielo, PubMed e na Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS), nas línguas portuguesa e inglesa. Foram selecionados 33 artigos, dos quais a maior concentração ocorreu em 2017. O estado de São Paulo destacou-se pela maior quantidade de publicações e quanto ao periódico, evidenciou-se a Revista Brasileira de Educação Especial. Em termos de classificação Qualis/Capes, prevaleceu o estrato A1 e B1. Quanto a classificação por tipo de deficiência e por público alvo, houve dificuldade em definilas por apresentaram maior prevalência nos itens "outros" e "não consta". Concluiuse que a tecnologia assistiva é ainda pouco explorada no âmbito da pesquisa, e ainda assim, observando-se a dificuldade quanto às classificações por tipo de deficiência e público alvo. São relativamente escassos os artigos publicados sobre a temática. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: pessoa com deficiência, publicações, tecnologia assistiva. Does Customized Handle Toothbrush Influence Dental Plaque Removal in Children with Down Syndrome? A Randomized Controlled Trial

The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of customized handle toothbrush in dental plaque removal in children with Down syndrome in comparison to children with no special needs. A randomized clinical trial was performed on 48 children aged 6–9 years old. Participants were divided into two groups (n = 24, children with no special needs or with Down syndrome). Each group was divided into two subgroups (customized and conventional toothbrush). Plaque accumulation was evaluated using Turesky modification of the Quigley–Hein plaque index (TMQHPI) at four times (pre-brushing (T0), post-brushing at baseline (T1), 1 week (T2) and 3 weeks (T3)), and the modified gingival index (MGI) was used to evaluate the gingivitis at three times (T0, T2 and T3). Data were statistically analyzed. Plaque accumulation and gingivitis decreased significantly for all groups between T0 and T3 (p < 0.05). Both customized groups demonstrated significant lower plaque accumulation compared to conventional groups (p < 0.05) at T1, T2 and T3 and significant lower gingivitis at T3. Customizing the toothbrush handle improved child’s ability for plaque control, especially in children with Down syndrome.
