Tooth Resorption Following an Alveolar Bone Graft in a Patient With Complete Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate

Abstract: We report a case of secondary alveolar bone grafting (ABG) without removal of a supernumerary tooth in a patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate. A conical supernumerary tooth located distal to the upper left central incisor within the cleft site was left in situ at the time of ABG. The tooth within the ABG site commenced resorption from both the apical and incisal edges until only minor tooth remnants remained at 22 months. Although external root resorption of teeth neighboring a cleft site has been desc… Show more

“…Alveolar cleft is a bony defect that involves the maxillary arch. As a key step in the sequential treatment of cleft lip and palate, alveolar cleft repair aims at reconstructing the continuity of dental arch and overall alveolar process, providing bone support for adjacent teeth and unerupted teeth, and providing stable dental arch maxilla (Jensen and Stevens, 2020; Kato et al, 2021). Regarding cleft defects treatment, autogenous iliac cancellous bone graft has become the ideal treatment for the repair of alveolar cleft, providing abundant cancellous bone (Vura et al, 2020; Mahardawi et al, 2021).…”
