Tooth multi-sectioning with the use of magnification, for extraction of a deeply impacted lower second molar with entrapment of the inferior alveolar nerve: Report of a case

Abstract: SUMMARY Inferior alveolar nerve injury is one of the most serious complications of mandibular molar surgery and may lead to litigation for mal-practice. Entrapment of the inferior alveolar nerve to roots of an impacted mandibular molars is extremely rare. The aim of this case report is to stress the importance of tooth multi-sectioning with the use of magnification for the safe removal of a deeply impacted second molar with entrapment of the inferior alveolar nerve in its proximal root.

“…When surgery is embarked upon, there is no approved management technique; however, the use of a rotary handpiece is a common approach and aims to make elective surgical cuts for favourable fractures within the tooth to allow the opportunity to free the IDN and then remove the tooth. Tilaveridis et al . reports on a case surgically removing a PM8 of a 19‐year‐old male under magnification (5X) in which the root around the IDN was fractured into four pieces and removed.…”
