Background: To assess the prevalence of the symptoms and signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and determine the prevalence of TMDs among elderly Vietnamese aged 65-74 years old. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 258 participants aged 65-74 years old (128 females and 130 males) using two strategies for TMD diagnosis: a clinical examination of the temporomandibular joint and its associated structures using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders Axis I; and a set of 14 questions regarding TMD symptoms to obtain anamnestic data. Results: The prevalence of TMD symptoms was: headache 49.6%; temporomandibular joint noise 28.0%; orofacial pain 25.2%; jaw locking 3.1%; 62.5% of participants had at least one TMD symptom. Headaches were more prevalent in females than males (p=0.009) and rural than urban residents (p<0.001). The most frequent signs were temporomandibular joint crepitus (50.4%), clicking (48.1%) and mouth-opening deviation (37.6%). Temporomandibular joint crepitus and mouthopening deviation were more frequent among rural than urban (p=0.024 and p<0.001, respectively). TMD was found in 56.6% of the total sample. Of the TMD sufferers, 37.6% were diagnosed with disc displacement, 34.9% with degenerative joint disease, 3.5% with myalgia and 1.2% with arthralgia. Conclusions: More than half of elderly Vietnamese have at least one TMD symptom. TMD sounds were the most common clinical sign of TMD. There were no differences between the genders or place of residence and TMD diagnosis. Disc displacement and degenerative joint disease were most prevalent among elderly Vietnamese.

Prevalence of periodontal disease among Vietnamese adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

To synthesize previous findings on the prevalence of periodontal disease (PD) in the adult Vietnamese population, a search for peer-reviewed literature was conducted using the MEDLINE, PubMed and Scopus databases through January 10, 2022. Two reviewers individually assessed abstracts and full-text articles to determine their suitability for inclusion. Only English articles were included if their results described the prevalence of PD among the Vietnamese. Among 900 potential studies, 8 cross-sectional studies with 7,262 adult participants qualified to be included. We found that overall the prevalence of PD was 64.9% (95% confidence interval (CI): 45-81%), with very high heterogeneity across the observed prevalence estimates (Q = 1,204.8776; df = 7; p < 0.001; I 2 = 99.42%). Further subgroup analyses stratified by age, location, sampling, study design, and region also revealed significant differences, with a higher prevalence of PD among (1) population-based studies, (2) participants aged ≥65 years, (3) participants with non-chronic diseases, (4) studies using the WHO, community periodontal index (CPI) and standard oral examinations, (5) studies conducted in Central Vietnam, and (6) studies using randomization sampling (p < 0.01) than in other populations. Sensitivity analyses validated the stability of the current findings. Within the limits of the available evidence, this meta-analysis showed a high percentage of Vietnamese adults suffer from PD. Nonetheless, the findings should be taken cautiously due to the limited number of published articles and the possibility of bias in the included research. More well-designed studies with larger sample sizes are thus required for further verification.

Symptoms, disc position, occluding pairs, and facial skeletal characteristics of older patients with temporomandibular disorders

Objective To describe the proportions of different osseous diagnoses in older patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and to analyze the symptoms, disc position, occluding pairs, and facial skeletal characteristics of patients with bilateral osteoarthrosis (BOA) and bilateral normal joints (BNJ). Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study constituted 88 older patients (age ≥60 years). The osseous diagnosis, symptoms, disc position, occluding pairs, and facial skeletal characteristics were evaluated. Variables in BOA patients and BNJ patients were compared using the t-test and chi-square test. Results Forty-eight patients had BOA, 7 had unilateral osteoarthrosis, 11 had intermediate osteoarthrosis, and 22 had BNJ. The prevalence of disc displacement without reduction (DDw/oR) in BOA patients was significantly higher than in BNJ patients. BOA patients exhibited greater ANB angle, PP-MP, U1-NPo, L1-NPo, and facial convexity angle; shorter posterior cranial base; and decreased ramus height. Conclusion BOA patients with associated DDw/oR had more complaints of orofacial pain and exhibited a shorter posterior cranial base, and greater mandibular retrusion, anterior tooth protrusion, and protruded profile than BNJ patients.
