Tooth discolouration: Staining effects of various sealers and medicaments

Abstract: The aim of this investigation was to quantify the discolouration of tooth roots caused by various medicaments and sealers. The roots of extracted teeth were chemo-mechanically prepared and the smear layer removed. The roots were filled with either Multi-Cal (Pulpdent Corporation, Watertown, MA, USA), Ledermix (Lederle Laboratories, Wolfratshausen, Germany), 2% chlorhexadine acetate in polyethylene glycol (PEG), 5% clindamycin in PEG, PEG alone (as a vehicle control), sealers AH26 (De Trey Dentsply, Zurich, Swi… Show more

“…This problem both limits systemic administration of tetracycline antibiotics to periods other than during anterior tooth formation, [1][2][3] and raises concerns of iatrogenic staining for certain endodontic medicaments and irrigants. [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Bleaching may be a more conservative option for affected teeth than full coverage crowns or veneers. [11][12][13] While nightguard vital bleaching can be effective, prolonged treatment times are needed.…”

“…The main difference between Odontopaste and Ledermix Paste is in its antibiotic ingredient: clindamycin hydrochloride in Odontopaste replaces demeclocycline hydrochloride in Ledermix Paste. Clindamycin hydrochloride has an equivalent spectrum of antibacterial activity but exhibits minimal staining of teeth (22). There are different recommendations for mixing Ledermix or Odontopaste with calcium hydroxide.…”

“…Samples were stored in the dark at 37°C and 100% humidity between light exposure and photographed after 1, 3, and 6 months. Roots which had been prepared but had not been treated with CAP were run in parallel to control a possible effect of either light or storage alone [31] on the colour of roots.…”
