The aim of this study was to optimize machining parameters to obtain the smallest average surface roughness (Ra) and flank wear (Vb) values as a result of the surface milling of a nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloy (SMA) with uncoated cutting tools with different nose radius (rε) under dry cutting conditions. Tungsten carbide cutting tools with different rε (0.4 mm and 0.8 mm) were used in milling operations. The milling process was performed as lateral/surface cutting at three different cutting speeds (Vc) (20, 35 and 50 m/min), feed rates (fz) (0.03, 0.07 and 0.14 mm/tooth) and a constant axial cutting depth (0.7 mm). The effects of machining parameters in milling experiments were investigated based on the Taguchi L18 (21 × 32) orthogonal sequence, and the data obtained were analyzed using the Minitab 17 software. To determine the effects of processing parameters on Ra and Vb, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. The analysis results reveal that the dominant factor affecting the Ra is the cutting tool rε, while the main factor affecting Vb is the fz. Since the predicted values and measured values are very close to each other, it can be said that optimization is correct according to the validation test results.

Surface finish of machined parts is a significant quality mark for a range of applications such as aerospace, automotive, power transmission and generation. Therefore, optimization of surface roughness is the key factor for reliability in machining difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium-based alloys. In this study, an investigation into hard turning of Ti6Al4V alloys with varying process parameters and cutting tool materials was carried out. This study aims to compare the generated surface roughness when turning Ti6Al4V alloys using CBN and coated ceramic inserts, independently, under the same values of feed rate, cutting speed and depth of cut. The experiments were designed using Taguchi L9 and the exponential results were examined by the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The effect of process parameters and their interactions on generated surface roughness was evaluated for the two inserts. It was found improvement of surface roughness by 34% was achieved when using coated ceramic insert compared with the results obtained using CBN insert under the same range cutting conditions. CBN insert gave a better result at smallest depth of cut (0.15 mm), low feed rate (0.1 mm/rev) and high cutting speed (100 m/min) while coated ceramic tool gave a minimum surface roughness at depth of cut (0.2 mm), feed rate (0.1 mm/rev) and high cutting speed (100 m/min).

The nickel‐titanium (NiTi) alloy, “Nitinol”, has become a prominent name in the medical device industry amongst medical device manufacturers. The unique properties of the material, such as the shape memory effect and pseudoelasticity, have earned the material increasing popularity for new product innovations. Amongst the various manufacturing processes for metal alloys, laser micromachining has taken the lead for processing Nitinol‐based products. This literature review provides an analysis of the history and applications of Nitinol, an overview of the microstructure of the material, and a review of the current manufacturing methods for laser cutting medical‐grade Nitinol. A more in‐depth focus is placed on the realm of laser processing and the challenges associated with the manufacturing process. Ultrafast femtosecond pulse processing delivers promising results and quality for manufacturing Nitinol medical devices. However, there exists a need to investigate potential approaches to increase the cutting speed of the process to enhance throughput and stay competitive in a growing market due to the cutting speed being over 4‐times slower than long pulse cutting. Many tactics to address the problem are discussed, ranging from laser selection, processing parameters, and non‐traditional laser processing approaches.This article is protected by copyright.
