Too close to see: men, women, and webcams

Abstract: Internet studies researchers should consider how internet spectators are addressed and encouraged to engage. In this article, I offer some basic comments about internet spectatorship and present a detailed analysis of the ways in which spectatorship operates in the women’s webcam form. Webcam spectators may have less control than they expect because women webcam operators exert authority and achieve agency through their visibility. Feminist considerations of spectatorship and the gaze offer important methods f… Show more

“…Some studies, however, point up the activity's subversive aspect (Knight, 2000). By considering sexcamming from the angle of identity construction, this research shows how broadcasting erotic shows can give women a way to regain control over their bodies and their sexuality (White, 2003;Senft, 2008;Nayar, 2017). Although close attention should be paid to the risks and opportunities of sexcamming for women, it is important not to lose sight of the activity's socioeconomic dimension.…”

“…Although sexcamming is a key line of business in the new sex economy, it remains relatively uncharted territory (Jones, 2015;Henry and Farvid, 2017). In the 2000s, some ground-breaking studies did look into the nascent industry (see, in particular, Knight, 2000;White, 2003;Dobson, 2007;Senft, 2008), but this research and other more recent studies often consider the business from the angle of the feminist "sex wars" controversy. These studies, whether for or against the controversy (Jones, 2016), generally discuss the trade's coercive or empowering nature (Cruz and Sajo, 2015;Jones, 2016;Henry and Farvid, 2017).…”

“…Media use (like development) is an area where sexualities are actively made and remade (Chen 2003;Magnet 2007;Senfst 2000;Turkle 1995;White 2003). ICT4D needs to include an understanding of the potential affective and sexual effects of interventions.…”
