“…We reported similar dose-response associations with hypertonia and postural abnormalities in newborns (30), but in those analyses we were limited in our ability to control for cigarette exposure with biomarkers, which others have linked to hypertonia (32). Beyond the neonatal period Hurt et al report no neurological findings associated with prenatal cocaine exposure in 30 month-old infants (10) while Belcher et al described similar postural anomalies in this age group (29).…”

“…Other have described muscle tone abnormalities, hypertonia in particular, among cocaine-exposed infants and toddlers (27;27-31). We described hypertonia among infants at risk for HIV with cocaine exposure that resolved by 24 months (28), but were unable to control for confounding exposures, especially tobacco exposure, which has been linked to hypertonus (32).…”

“…The AAP clinical report on neonatal drug withdrawal contains in-depth information on neonatal drug withdrawal, including treatment options. 155 Neurobehavior Abnormalities of newborn neurobehavior, including impaired orientation and autonomic regulation 156 and abnormalities of muscle tone, 144,147,157 have been identified in a number of prenatal nicotine exposure studies. Poor habituation and low levels of arousal along with motor abnormalities have been identified in women who drank alcohol heavily during their pregnancy.…”

“…Resulta interesante señalar, una vez más, la dificultad de separar los efectos debidos a diferentes sustancias; aunque la hipertonía muscular es, del mismo modo que la microcefalia, un hallazgo frecuente en neonatos expuestos a cocaína, dicho podría deberse al uso concomitante de otras sustancias (en este caso, tabaco) a lo largo del embarazo 43 .…”
