TomoTherapy for Cranial Radiosurgery/Radiotherapy

Abstract: Abstract-We have used TomoTherapy for the treatment of cranial lesions with single fraction radiosurgery (SRS) as well as fractionated radiotherapy (SRT). TomoTherapy image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) allows very good imaging of bony anatomy, however regions where subtle contour changes occur may be difficult to match and are prone to subjective interpretation. The purpose of this study is to use highcontrast gold fiducials, permanently implanted into the skull, as objective markers to aid in determining t… Show more

“…Advanced concepts in radiation therapy delivery techniques, such as volumetric or helical delivery of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) integrated with computed tomography (CT) imaging are now widely diffused. Helical tomotherapy (HT) (Accuray, Madison, WI, USA) has shown its potential as a precise stereotactic radiosurgery delivery system (3,4). The on-board megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) system can achieve an accurate localization of the target because the high-contrast spatial resolution is similar to a diagnostic CT (5) and the longitudinal spatial resolution has been recently improved with the "J1" upgrade (reduction of jaw size) (6) using a 1 mm jaws aperture to produce MVCT projections.…”

“…Helical Tomotherapy (HT) has been considered as a possible treatment for brain metastases [4][5][6] including single fraction treatments [5] and as whole brain treatment with a concomitant boost [6]. This report discusses the spatial dose distribution of HT as measured in a head phantom and the clinical course of five patients.…”
