PurposeAs the human race moved from the Paleolithic to the current phases of the Neolithic period, the learning process developed from inscriptions on stones to clay tablets, from papyrus to papers and, ultimately, to digital technology. From ancient times to the present, public libraries have become open universities that are more democratic in the provision of educational and information services and the preservation of cultural heritage, regardless of gender and belief. This study attempts to understand reading trends and the use of citizens’ resources in public libraries in the age of technology as an open university.Design/methodology/approachThe data for this study on regular visitors, permanent library members, and information on the library inventory was collected from each public library administration through personal visits and interviews. In addition, data on regional population and literacy rates were collected from the Government of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Bureau of Statistics. The authors used descriptive statistics to analyze data for comparative studies.FindingsThe results show that daily visitors, regular library members and their use of library resources are decreasing compared to the literacy rate in each district. It was also concluded that, due to a lack of education and training in the area of information and digital literacy, the accessed database resources are not used properly. Moreover, each densely populated district relies on a single public library to meet general education and information needs.Practical implicationsThe results of this study will help the government expand the network of public libraries at the union council level with competent working staff to increase general motivation to improve reading and resource usage trends. Given the current literacy and population growth in each district, the law on the public library can also be amended and implemented to support the existing library system better and create more libraries in the public interest.Originality/valueThis study was conducted for the first time to determine the current state of public libraries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and to help public library authorities improve their existing public library service status based on the results.

J. Aulisiu, defi nicija zelene knjižnice ne bi se trebala u tolikoj mjeri vezati uz samu zgradu jer nisu sve knjižnice u mogućnosti ući u taj ekskluzivni klub dovoljno sretnih i bogatih. Cilj. Cilj je rada prikazati primjer dobre prakse poslovanja Gradske knjižnice Ri- jeka tijekom izvanrednih uvjeta rada u kojima knjižnice nisu bile ﬁzički otvorene za korisnike. Pristup/metodologija/dizajn. Rad je nastao na temelju praćenja primjera dobre prakse nastalih u Gradskoj knjižnici Rijeka tijekom lockdowna, tijekom ožujka i travnja 2020. godine te analizom kvantitativnih i kvalitativnih rezultata. U uvodu članka pred- stavljen je kontekst u kojem je tijekom ožujka i travnja 2020. godine Gradska knjižnica Rijeka organizirala svoje poslovanje. Članak je usmjeren na nove usluge i programske aktivnosti koje je Knjižnica pokrenula u novonastaloj situaciji te u digitalnom okru- ženju. U zaključku je izneseno razmišljanje o mogućnostima razvoja novopokrenutih usluga koje bi mogle postati, a od kojih neke to već i jesu, dio poslovanja Knjižnice. Rezultati. Predstavljeni rezultati dobiveni su praćenjem evidencije posjeta mrežnih stranica, društvenih mreža i YouTube kanala te statistikama dobivenima iz računalnog programa ZaKi, ali i promatranjem i analizom ponuđenih usluga i programskih aktiv- nosti. Društveni značaj. Ovim načinom rada lokalnoj je zajednici ponuđena mogućnost sudjelovanja u barem dijelu kulturnih aktivnosti u virtualnom svijetu koje su im tijekom lockdowna bile potpuno onemogućene u onom ﬁzičkom. Originalnost/vrijednost. Rad je prikaz primjera dobre prakse i poslovanja Grad- ske knjižnice Rijeka te zbog organizacijskih, logističkih i inih razlika među pojedinim knjižnicama nije u potpunosti primjenjiv na druge knjižnice u Republici Hrvatskoj, ali može biti dobar putokaz pri organizaciji poslovanja u uvjetima nesklonima za rad, pose- bice u uvjetima u kojima nije moguć ﬁzički pristup korisnika u knjižnicu.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explain the concepts related to environmental education in the context of sustainable development, to indicate the links between them as well as to identify and organize elements of library activities that have the potential to implement environmental education.Design/methodology/approachThe method of analysis and criticism of scientific and professional literature and research reports was used. The multiple case study method was also used.FindingsAn analysis of literature and multiple case studies confirms the assumption that sustainable development is now a new paradigm of librarianship. Among the goals of sustainable development are environmental goals, which in libraries can be achieved through environmental education. A broad approach to environmental education has been proposed, which is implemented not only by using library services but also by building green collections, contacts with environmentally involved librarians, using ecological library infrastructure, observing sustainable management methods in libraries, cooperation between the library and the external environment in terms of the natural environment.Research limitations/implicationsAn analysis of 20 case studies was carried out regarding the implementation of pro-environmental measures in libraries. Examination of a larger number of case studies would probably give a more complete picture of this area of activity in libraries. The next stage of research should be the development of standards/guidelines in the field of environmental education in libraries, and then the development of methods and techniques for assessing the quality of library activities in this area and methods for assessing the impact of libraries on society and the environment in the field of environmental education.Practical implicationsThe paper indicates – based on case study analyses – those library elements that have potential in the field of environmental education. They were ordered in categories that were assigned to the three main components of a library: people, artefacts and processes.Social implicationsSustainable development is a new library paradigm. The paper focuses on the environmental area, specifically environmental education. It has been recognized that libraries have considerable potential for environmental education and should be seen as socially responsible organizations that take responsibility for the impact of their decisions and actions on society and the environment.Originality/valueThe paper explains the basic concepts of environmental education and the relationships between them. It defines the area of environmental education in libraries in terms of library activity elements that can be used to organize them according to the three main components of a library, which are people, artefacts and processes. The paper also indicates that sustainable development should be treated as a new paradigm of librarianship, and environmental education as a new research field of library and information science.
