Tomography of Electrospun Carbon Nanotube Polymeric Blends by Focus Ion Beam: Alignment and Phase Separation Analysis from Multicontrast Electron Imaging

Abstract: Multimodal focused ion beam (FIB) imaging on a polydimethylsiloxane/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) electrospun composite has been applied to discriminate the phase‐separated polymer blend and identify MWCNT fillers. Upon tomographic reconstruction, this discrimination has been possible through both atomic number and voltage contrast, the latter being enabled by preferential MWCNT segregation to PMMA. This study suggests that electrospinning could be affecting not only MWCNT … Show more

“…A similar protocol has also been used to understand the interaction between osteoblasts and PLGA fibers [211,212]. The Campo group were successful in the alignment and the phase separation analysis of a polydimethylsiloxane/poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) electrospun composite [213], resolving the contrast mechanism between the polymer and the MWCNT by synchrotron spectroscopy and helium microscopy. Diblìkovà and co-authors published a paper in which they reconstructed three mixed-matrix membranes of polymide-silicalite [214].…”

“…Although SEM could give information about the morphology of UHMWPE‐based blends, they cannot directly provide related information on the chemical components within the blends and well defined structures of the blends with no obvious phase separation. In the recent reports, multicontrast electron imaging, high‐resolution Kelvin probe force microscopy imaging, and two‐dimensional polarization imaging (2D‐POLIM) techniques have also been employed to characterize the polymer blends from different views . However, they are mostly complex and difficult to operate in use.…”
