Tomographic Reservoir Imaging with DNA-Labeled Silica Nanotracers: The First Field Validation

Abstract: This study presents the first field validation of using DNA-labeled silica nanoparticles as tracers to image subsurface reservoirs by travel time based tomography. During a field campaign in Switzerland, we performed short-pulse tracer tests under a forced hydraulic head gradient to conduct a multisource−multireceiver tracer test and tomographic inversion, determining the two-dimensional hydraulic conductivity field between two vertical wells. Together with three traditional solute dye tracers, we injected sph… Show more

“…A meaningful interpretation of smart tracer experiments requires a priori knowledge of the reservoir parameters such as flow rate, temperature, pH or length of the flow path that is often lacking. Thus, the results based solely on the assessment of the smart tracer cannot stand on their own 13,14 .…”

“…18 The tracers in the present study are encapsulated in a polymer, PLGA-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-to protect the DNA and prolong its efficacy. Kong et al 19 and Mikutis et al 20 have encapsulated DNA in silica for a similar protective coating. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) is biodegradable and nontoxic in the environment and made from renewable resources.…”
