This review provides an overview of our present state of knowledge using manganese oxide (MnOx)-based catalysts for toluene abatement in PPC (Post plasma-catalysis) configuration. The context of this study is concisely sum-up. After briefly screening the main depollution methods, the principles of PPC are exposed based on the coupling of two mature technologies such as NTP (Non thermal plasma) and catalysis. In that respect, the presentation of the abundant manganese oxides will be firstly given. Then in a second step the main features of MnOx allowing better performances in the reactions expected to occur in the abatement of toluene in PPC process are reviewed including ozone decomposition, toluene ozonation, CO oxidation and toluene total oxidation. Finally, in a last part the current status of the applications of PPC using MnOx on toluene abatement are discussed. In a first step, the selected variables of the hybrid process related to the experimental conditions of toluene abatement in air are identified. The selected variables are those expected to play a role in the performances of PPC system towards toluene abatement. Then the descriptors linked to the performances of the hybrid process in terms of efficiency are given and the effects of the variables on the experimental outcomes (descriptors) are discussed. The review would serve as a reference guide for the optimization of the PPC process using MnOx-based oxides for toluene abatement.

The combination of non-thermal plasma (NTP) and catalyst characterized by high energy efficiency, enhanced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal efficiency, high product selectivity, and low production of unwanted and/or toxic by-products possesses a great promise for the abatement of VOCs. This work reviews the state of knowledge regarding Mn-based catalysts for VOCs abatement in the post-plasma-catalytic (PPC) system. First, the development and the performance of different Mn-based catalysts such as pure manganese oxide, mixed manganese oxide-based catalysts, and supported Mn-based catalysts in terms of VOCs abatement and O 3 decomposition are summarized. Then, the mechanism of the VOCs decomposition in the NTP and PPC system is discussed. Finally, the modeling and simulation of VOCs abatement in the NTP and PPC system are overviewed. This review aims at providing a reference guide for the development and optimization of VOCs abatement in the PPC system using Mn-based catalysts.

This paper studies the toluene removal by a two-stage dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-catalyst system with three catalysts: MnO(x)/ZSM-5, CoMnO(x)/ZSM-5, and CeMnO(x)/ZSM-5. V-Q Lissajous method, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) are used to characterize the DBD and catalysts. The DBD processing partially oxidizes the toluene, and the removal efficiency has a linear relationship with ozone generation. Three DBD-catalyst systems are compared in terms of their toluene removal efficiency, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, carbon balance, CO selectivity, CO2 selectivity, and ozone residual. The results show that the DBD-catalyst system with CoMnO(x)/ZSM-5 performs better than the other two systems. It has the highest removal efficiency of about 93.7%, and the corresponding energy yield is 4.22 g/kWh. The carbon balance and CO2 selectivity of CoMnO(x)/ZSM-5 is also better than the other two catalysts. The measurements of two important byproducts including aerosols and ozone are also presented.
