The present study was designed to assess phytostabilization strategies for the treatment of soil co-contaminated by increasing levels of copper with the application mineral amendments (chalcedonite, zeolite, dolomite). From the results it will be possible to further elucidate the benefits or potential risks derived from the application of different types of mineral amendments in the remediation of a copper contaminated soil. A glasshouse pot experiment was designed to evaluate the potential use of different amendments as immobilizing agents in the aided phytostabilization of Cu-contaminated soil using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The content of trace elements in plants and total in soil, were determined using the method of spectrophotometry. All of the investigated element contents in the tested parts of L. perenne were significantly different in the case of applying mineral amendments to the soil, as well as increasing concentrations of copper. The greatest average above-ground biomass was observed for soil amended with chalcedonite. In this experiment, all analyzed metals accumulated predominantly in the roots of the tested plant. In general, applying mineral amendments to soil contributed to decreased levels of copper concentrations.

Lime bordeaux mixture (LBM) and lime sulfur mixture (LSM) are representative environmental friendly organic materials for prevention of insect pests in South Korea. Recently, those have been widely used as an alternative for chemical pesticides in eco-friendly farms. However, South Korea has not established even recommendation of LBM and LSM considering the stability of heavy metals in soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accumulation of hazardous heavy metals in soil and plant with long-term application of LBM and LSM. Firstly, we investigated the amount of LBM and LSM used per year in several eco-friendly farms to determine a standard application rate of both materials. The pepper plant was grown on the pot in greenhouse for 14 weeks. Both materials were applied at 0, 1, 3, and 9 times of standard application rates (2.56 and 1.28 L ha -1 of LBM and LSM per year, respectively). Dry matter yield of pepper and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentration in soil and pepper plant were measured after 14 weeks. Yield of pepper plant did not significantly chang with up to application rate of 1 times, thereafter it markedly decreased with more than 3 times. With increasing LBM and LSM application, the concentration of Cu and Zn in soil significantly increased. Especially, Zn concentration in pepper significantly increased with increasing application rates of both materials. This might resulted in significant decrease in dry matter yield of pepper. The concentrations of those heavy metals in soil did not exceed safety levels (150 mg kg -1 for Cu and 300 mg kg -1 for Zn) established by the Korean Soil Environmental Conservation Act as well as concentration of heavy metals in pepper plant by Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. However, particular attention should be paid for heavy metal safety and crop productivity when using LBM and LSM in the organic farm.

In this study, Cu and Zn concentrations were monitored for 12 months in sewage sludge from the Malatya Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant (MABWTP). The obtained data were evaluated both monthly and seasonally and compared with the standard values given in the Regulation on the Use of Domestic and Urban Sewage Sludge in Soil. The highest Cu and Zn concentrations in sewage sludge from the MABWTP were 181.74±9.0 mg kg -1 and 653.8±32.6 mg kg -1 in September and the lowest Cu and Zn concentrations were 103.69±5.18 mg kg -1 and 436.2±21.8 mg kg -1 in December and March. The highest concentrations of Cu and Zn in the sewage sludge from MABWTP were found to be 167.21±8.3 mg kg -1 and 611.80±30.5 mg kg -1 in the summer and autumn, and the lowest Cu and Zn concentrations were 109.39±5.4 mg kg -1 and 440.13±22 mg kg -1 in the winter season. When the concentrations of Cu and Zn in the MABWTP treatment sludge were examined, it was found that they were lower than the limit values given in the regulation. As a result, it was determined that sewage sludge taken from MABWTP could be used for soil in terms of Cu and Zn concentrations.
