Today's sheet metal materials and their forming properties

Abstract: The production and processing of sheet metals of high-strength steels, titanium, aluminum or magnesium alloys is investigated intensively at universities and in the industry. The main emphasis is put for example on the aluminum space frame concept as well as on the succeeding projects of the ULSAB-study in the field of the steel sheet metals.Within this article the qualification of the above mentioned materials for the application as deep-drawing materials will be discussed. The aim of the development for new … Show more

“…While die casting is commonly used for production of some structural magnesium parts, wrought forms of these same alloys can generally achieve much higher strength and ductility [27]. The increase in ductility is attributed to the reduction of internal casting defects, such as shrinkage pores and oxides, by means of plastic deformation during the wrought forming process.…”

“…The Lorentz's force will compress and deform the tubular piece, if the induced stresses are higher than its yield strength. The deformation process is completed within a few microseconds [1,2,3,4,5,6,7].…”

“…However, the influence of process parameters on the performance of the joints is hardly investigated. A deeper knowledge about this is necessary to establish electromagnetic forming in industrial production [1,2,3,4].…”

“…Mass reducing lightweight construction is a current trend in automobile sheet metal forming because of fuel and feedstock saving; also in combination with weight shifting in order to increase comfort provided by additional equipment [1]. This aim can be attained by using either sheet metal materials of lower density, or of higher strength, thereby enabling sheet width reduction.…”
