Tocotrienols have a nephroprotective action against lipid-induced chronic renal dysfunction in rats

Abstract: Vitamin E is the generic term for a group of tocopherols and tocotrienols (T3). Hyperlipidemia has been known to cause progressive chronic renal dysfunction (CRD). Several investigators have reported that T3 have hypolipidemic and nephroprotective activity against free radicalrelated diseases. This study was conducted to determine if T3 as tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) from palm oil would protect against lipid-induced CRD in rats. For the induction of atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia, Wistar male rats were… Show more

“…Being among the most widely available natural antioxidants, tocopherols (TOH), especially α‐ and γ‐tocopherol, have been found in vegetable oils (Wagner & Elmadfa, 2000). Many physiological functions, such as hypolipidemic, antiatherogenic, antihypertensive, and neuroprotective effects, have been attributed to the tocopherols and tocotrienols (Franco et al., 2019; Kizhakekuttu & Widlansky, 2010; Rashid Khan et al, 2015; Shahidi & De Camargo, 2016).…”

“…This shows that the actions of the antioxidants in fresh palm oil far outweigh the actions of the saturated palmitic acid. This is supported by Several investigators who reported that tocotrienols T3 have strong antioxidant activity and protects efficiently against some free radical-related diseases [34,9].…”

“…It is the largest natural source of tocotrienol which is the most potent form of vitamin E [4], which act as antioxidants [5], strengthen the immune system, protects the skin cells from toxins and ultra violet radiation [6] stimulate rapid recovery from induced heart attack [7], and has anti-cancer properties [8]. They also have a nephroprotective action against lipidinduced chronic renal dysfunction in rats [9].…”

“…It has been reported that cows fed with tallow showed higher total cholesterol in plasma than cows fed a low-fat diet [65]. Moreover, 21% tallow with 1.25% cholesterol consumption for six weeks led to renal dysfunction and atherosclerosis in the rats [66]. In addition, a beef tallow diet promoted body fat accumulation and reduced norepinephrine turnover rate in brown adipose tissue by reducing sympathetic activity [67].…”
