Tobacco smoking and health-related quality of life among university students: Mediating effect of depression

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the association between cigarette smoking and healthrelated quality of life (HRQoL) among students in two different universities, and the potential mediating effect of depression. Participants were students who came for mandatory checkups at Student Health Care Centers in two Universities in Serbia, differing by socio-politically and economically environments. “…While many healthcare professionals report high rates of burnout and poor mental health and wellbeing, it is likely that the student population is even more vulnerable to the development of mental health problems [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ]. Several studies have reported that medical students have a poor mental health and a low access to adequate treatments [ 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ]. Furthermore, the mean age of access to a medical school corresponds with the mean age of onset of many mental disorders.…”

“…Smoking has been associated with both poor and fair self-rated health status in various groups [12,14]. Previous literature has documented that smoking has a negative association with various measures of quality of life [8], including oral health [7], and a lower self-rated quality of life in the general population [9]. Viana and colleagues (2019) assessed quality of life among older adult smokers using the World Health Organization Quality of Life and Quality of Assessment for Older Adults.…”

“…The eight domains are physical functioning (PF), role limitations because of physical health problems (role-physical (RP)), bodily pain (BP), general health (GH) perceptions, vitality (VT), social functioning (SF), role limitations because of emotional problems (role-emotional (RE)) and general MH ( Ware & Sherbourne, 1992 ). The first four domains (PF, RP, BP and GH) constitute the physical health and the other four domains (VT, SF, RE and MH) constitute the MH ( Milic et al, 2020 ). The SF36 is widely used in health research and is validated and tested for reliability by several studies in Serbia ( Ilic et al, 2020 ; Stojanov et al, 2019 ; Ware & Sherbourne, 1992 ).…”
