Tobacco-Free Cigarette Smoke Exposure Induces Anxiety and Panic-Related Behaviours in Male Wistar Rats

Abstract: Smokers, who generally present with lung damage, are more anxious than non-smokers and have an associated augmented risk of panic. Considering that lung damage signals specific neural pathways that are related to affective responses, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of pulmonary injury on anxiety and panic-like behaviours in animals exposed to cigarette smoke with and without tobacco. Male Wistar rats were divided into the following groups: a control group (CG); a regular cigarette gr… Show more

“…Indeed, our results suggest that the significant enhancement of anxiety-like behaviors upon continued exposure of WTS may be mediated by components of the WTS other than nicotine. These results coincide with recent work showing that tobacco-free cigarette smoke exposure induces anxiety in male rats, whereas regular cigarette smoke exposure is anxiolytic (Chírico et al, 2018). Monteggia, 2016).…”

“…In contrast to the anxiolytic effects of a regular cigarette smoke exposure, tobacco-free cigarette smoke exposure was found to have anxiogenic effects. The anxiogenic effects were correlated to the decreased glutathione levels in these cigarettes (Chírico et al, 2018). Certainly, adolescent mice exposed to low nicotine levels in tobacco exhibited defects in novelty seeking and anxiety-like behaviors (Abreu-Villaca et al, 2015).…”

“…Although the cigarettes were not pre-balanced with consistent moisture before beginning of the exposure, the sequence of the cages exposed in each day was alternated, to ensure similar characteristics of the air inhaled by all smoking rats until the end of the intervention period. Commercial cigarettes (Malboro Red ® , Philip Morris International, Brazil) containing 10mg of tar, 0.8 mg of nicotine, and 10 mg of carbon monoxide during the combustion were used, as already found in the literature [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…This may suggest reduced locomotor activity or anxiety (due to unwillingness to explore). Besides, reduced activity, anxiety, and panic-related behaviours have been reported in rats exposed to tobacco-free CS [6]. Smokers often report a sense of calm during and immediately after smoking, though transient [24].…”
