Objectives Research on the role of siblings in older adult migration lags behind a growing number of studies on adult children as a mobility attraction. We attend to this gap by examining (i) to what extent the absence of partners and/or adult children influences older adults’ (age 70-84) migration toward faraway siblings (at least 50 km away) and (ii) how these migrations are patterned by the location of other family members (children, other siblings, and nephews/nieces). Methods We use multinomial logistic regression models and analyze dyads of older adults and all distant siblings from the Swedish population register data between 2012 and 2016 (N = 1,743,234). We control for several characteristics of older adults and their siblings that may impact the decision to move closer, including sociodemographic characteristics and measures of location-specific capital. Results Widowed, divorced, and never married older adults were more likely to move closer to distant siblings than those with a partner. Not having children was associated with a higher likelihood of moving toward a sibling. Living near adult children or other siblings deterred relocation toward siblings, while family clustered at a distance reinforced the location’s attractiveness for migration. Discussion As declines in fertility broadly reflect people’s decisions to have fewer children or forego having families, siblings might emerge as more active players in the family networks of older adults. Our research indicates that siblings can be a destination for migration and, therefore, should be considered as important members of social networks of older adults, especially those who do not have partners and/or adult children available.

A partir de 14 entrevistas a profundidad con personas migrantes peruanas residentes en Suiza, el artículo analiza los arreglos familiares entre las y los hermanos migrantes y no migrantes en favor de sus madres y padres radicados en Perú. Los hallazgos subrayan que la toma de decisiones está marcada por relaciones de poder, donde el género y los recursos económicos desempeñan un rol decisivo. Así mismo, las negociaciones entre hermanas y hermanos están relacionadas con la capacidad de cumplir el deber filial de cuidar y de sentirse reconocido como el hijo o la hija que cuida a sus padres, tal como estos lo hicieron cuando ellos eran niños. Si bien la muestra abarca a un grupo de migrantes establecidos en Suiza que logró importantes niveles de integración social, cultural y laboral, los resultados proporcionan pistas sobre la problemática de los cuidados transnacionales aplicables a otros contextos de migración sur-norte.

“…Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in adult sibling relationships (see Gilligan et al, 2020; Walker et al, 2005, for reviews). Studies indicate that siblings remain an important social resource over the life course (e.g., Buchanan, 2021; White, 2001), but also provide evidence of considerable ambivalence and conflicts in sibling relationships (e.g., Bedford, 1989; Tanskanen et al, 2016). Moreover, a recent qualitative exploration by Blake et al (2022) showed that “siblings both can and do become estranged, [challenging] commonly held assumptions about family relationships, confirming that they are not necessarily or always life-long, significant or supportive.” We are not aware of any studies, though, assessing the quantitative dimension and dynamics of sibling estrangement drawing on a larger-scale population-based sample, which would allow for a more comprehensive and generalizable account of the phenomenon and its determinants.…”

Whereas interest in adult sibling relationships has been growing, we are not aware of any quantitative studies focusing on sibling estrangement (that is, lack of contact or emotional closeness). This gap in the literature seems unfortunate, because estrangement in close family relationships has been suggested to be momentous for family functioning and individuals’ well-being. Drawing on four waves of the German Family Panel (pairfam; n = 5,729), covering a 6-year observation period, we therefore assess respondents’ estrangement from up to four siblings in adulthood, focusing on the predictive role of core structural parameters of sibling dyads (especially genetic relatedness) and disruptive family events (particularly parental separation/divorce or death). Whereas 28% of respondents in our sample experienced at least one episode of estrangement from any sibling, estrangement occurred multiple times in only 14% of sibling dyads. Moreover, results derived from discrete-time event history models indicate (a) that genetic relatedness is the single most important risk factor, albeit strongly mediated by childhood co-residence, and (b) that sibling relations tend to become more “vulnerable” over the life course, when adverse family events accumulate.
