To screen or not to screen for vesicoureteral reflux in children with ureteropelvic junction obstruction: a systematic review

Abstract: Against this background, screening for VUR needs to be scrutinized and restricted to selected risk groups. What is known: • Screening of patients with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) for vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is recommended based on a small number of repeatedly cited studies. • The lack of conclusive evidence results in different treatment strategies and leads to difficulties when communicating diagnoses and treatment options to parents. What is new: • A robust prevalence for VUR in children wi… Show more

“…There is good evidence for the prediction of outcome after birth asphyxia in term infants, and the aEEG has been established as a tool to identify infants who will benefit from cooling 8 . In preterm infants, there is also good evidence that long-term neurological outcome can be predicted by early aEEG recordings 15 16 17 18 19 20 . However, to date, this knowledge does not result in consequences for clinical decision making in this population of infants.…”

“…aEEG has been proven to be a safe method for cerebral function monitoring, even in extremely preterm infants, and is generally well-accepted by NICU staff 14 . Several studies showed a correlation between early aEEG recordings and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants 15 16 17 18 19 20 .…”
