To eliminate trachoma: Azithromycin mass drug administration coverage and associated factors among adults in Goro district, Southeast Ethiopia

Abstract: Background Globally, although effective prevention strategies and treatment are available, trachoma remains the major cause of infectious loss of sight. Trachoma is a predominant neglected disease in Ethiopia, and there is a 40.4% prevalence of active trachoma in the Goro district, Southeast Ethiopia. World Health Organization (WHO) recommends azithromycin mass treatment of at least 80% coverage to eliminate trachoma, even though the coverage of azithromycin mass treatment has not been studied yet in depth. “…Ethiopia provides mass administration of azithromycin in areas with high levels of endemic trachoma; exposure to azithromycin can interfere with blood culture sensitivity. 29 , 30 These findings will need to be further examined using new environmental surveillance tools and more specific serosurveys. 24 , 31 , 32 Of particular note, serosurveys designed to identify asymptomatic infections and individuals with false-negative blood culture results could provide a more realistic estimate of the burden of typhoid fever in these settings.…”

“…The A component of SAFE involves Mass Drug Administration (MDA) utilizing azithromycin, a strategy successfully implemented in several endemic countries based on the presence of the clinical signs of inflammation [9][10][11][12]. By 2023, 18 endemic or hypoendemic countries had been validated for trachoma elimination [8,13].…”
