TNF-Alpha Inhibitors for Chronic Urticaria: Experience in 20 Patients

Abstract: Patients with severe chronic urticaria may not respond to antihistamines, and other systemic treatment options may either be ineffective or associated with unacceptable side effects. We present data on efficacy and safety of adalimumab and etanercept in 20 adult patients with chronic urticaria. Twelve (60%) patients obtained complete or almost complete resolution of urticaria after onset of therapy with either adalimumab or etanercept. Further three patients (15%) experienced partial response. Duration of tre… Show more

“…Of all patients, 39·6% were previously treated with prednisolone and 26·0% had been treated with dapsone or one or more immunosuppressant drugs such as ciclosporin A, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, methotrexate and/or tumour necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors. We have previously reported that among a subset of 25 patients with chronic urticaria who were naïve to biological drugs or who had received omalizumab, 60% obtained complete or almost complete resolution of urticaria and angioedema after onset of therapy with either adalimumab or etanercept, whereas another 15% of patients experienced a partial response to treatment with these TNF inhibitors …”

“…Studies, based on this theory, found higher TNF-α levels in CU patients, and treatments targeting TNF-α have been studied (20,21). However, some of the studies reported similar serum TNF-α levels in both CU patients and normal controls (22).…”
