Tm:YAG single-crystal fiber laser

Abstract: In this Letter, to the best of our knowledge, we present the first thulium (Tm) single-crystal fiber (SCF) laser with free-space propagation of the laser beam only. The SCF is equipped with diffusion-bonded end caps of undoped YAG for better thermal management and enhancement of pump guiding. By utilizing mode matching and pump guiding in different SCF parts, an output power of 9.1 W is achieved at ∼ 2.02 µ m with a slope efficiency of 49.4%. This straightforward approach,… Show more

“…For the OAM laser studies, the Yb:YAG SCF was mounted in a specially designed aluminum module, in direct contact with the cooling water, which simultaneously acted as a cladding. [ 64 ] A YAG plate was inserted into the cavity at Brewster's angle to enforce the horizontal linear polarization of the optical vortices. A lens with an optimized focal length of f = 175 mm was used to control the beam size on the SFOC by collimating the intracavity laser mode.…”

“…For the amplification studies, the SCF was mounted in a specially designed homemade module, directly in contact with cooling water which simultaneously acts as a cladding. [ 43 ] In view of the specific geometrical structure of the SCF compared to a conventional glass fiber, the spatial intensity distribution of the pump light could be simulated by using ray‐tracing analysis (Figure S1, Supporting Information). To ensure free‐space propagation of the laser beam and mode matching with the pump light in the SCF, the former was focused in the SCF to a spot diameter of ≈450 µm, the same as for the pump beam (Figure S2, Supporting Information).…”

“…In this work, we show that a single‐crystal fiber (SCF) amplifier is a good solution for the above described challenges, which is capable of providing straightforward power scaling while maintaining spatial and temporal properties of a broadband femtosecond optical vortex. The term SCF refers to an intermediate architecture between bulk crystals and optical fibers, [ 42–44 ] where the fiber‐like geometry combined with the crystalline nature exhibiting high thermal conductivity facilitate the management of the thermal load. [ 42 ] More importantly, the pump light is wave‐guided in the SCF to provide an azimuthally uniform gain distribution for the structured light within a long region, whereas the seed laser beam optics designed for free‐space propagation can retain the spatial light structure without mode coupling or perturbations.…”

“…A typical result of the beam quality is shown in figure 6(b) at an output power of 6.5 W. As can be seen in figures 6(c) and (d), beam profiles at the output power of 1.4 W and 6.5 W indicated the excitation of higher-order transverse modes with the laser power increasing. To further improve the beam quality, future work will focus on designing the pump-guiding region with a suitable pump waist in the laser operation [35] and optimizing the cavity design for proper fundamental mode size.…”
