Titration of Marek's Disease Cell-Associated Vaccine Virus (CVI 988) of Reconstituted Vaccine and Vaccine Ampoules from Dutch Hatcheries

Abstract: Thirty-one outbreaks of Marek's disease (MD) were reported in the Netherlands and retrospectively analyzed. The outbreaks occurred mostly in vaccinated commercial layer and a few breeder flocks of several breeds; however, the cause of the outbreaks could not be established. “…However, vaccine breaks, excessive MD losses in a vaccinated flock, do occur and can have several causes: inhibition of vaccine virus replication by maternal antibodies (King et al, 1981;de Boer et al, 1986); suppression of the immune response to vaccine by environmental stresses or co-infections with immunosuppressive pathogens; infection with a virulent MDV strain prior to establishment of full vaccinal immunity; infection of vaccinated and fully immunocompetent birds with a highly virulent MDV able to break CVI988 immunity (Witter et al, 2005); and, finally, administration of insufficient vaccine dose that thus fails to induce protective immunity.
