“…A number of routes have been developed to synthesize titanium carbide, including combustion reaction, gas phase reaction, sol–gel, thermal plasma, etc., 2–9 while commercial production resorts to a carbothermal reduction process due to its low cost. In a carbothermal reduction process, TiC is produced by the overall reaction where intimate contact between TiO 2 and carbon is very important to facilitate the reaction at high temperature.…”

“…To this end we applied the idea proposed by Benaldjia et al who utilized the thermite reaction to synthesize TiC. 24 They managed to control the combustion temperature and the wave propagation mode of the thermite reaction Fe 2 O 3 / Al by adding alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) as a neutral "diluent". They found that a decrease in the combustion temperature upon diluent addition led to a stable wave propagation and lower burning velocity.…”

“…They can be utilized for cutting and perforation of materials or synthesis of new advanced materials. [22][23][24] For instance, the Fe 2 O 3 /Al thermite reaction has been extensively studied and developed to be commercially applied in welding, producing composites and fabricating the alumina coatings inside metal pipes. 25 In addition, these reactions are utilized to solve certain environmental problems, such as treatment and recycling of municipal solid waste or by-products from the metal industry.…”

“…A specific process in the aluminothermic production of alloys is the recovery of part of the refractory metals (W, Co, Ti) in the form of metal carbides [33][34][35][36]. In this case, the aluminothermic reaction is used specifically, where the charge added to the carbon crucible consists of individual powder components (WO 3 , Co 2 O 3 , coal, aluminum, etc.)…”

“…The mixture is heated in an electric furnace at 900 • C in a stream of argon, then the synthesis is completed by short rapid heating at 1000 • C (ignition for an aluminothermic reaction). After cooling, the obtained material is ground and sieved to the required granulometry of about 1 µm [33].…”
