Tissue-Specific Control of Tissue-Resident Memory T Cells

Abstract: Tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells have emerged to be a major component of T cell biology. Recent investigations have greatly advanced our understanding of TRMs. Common features have been discovered to distinguish memory T cells residing in various mucosal and non-mucosal tissues from their circulating counterparts. Given that most organs and tissues contain unique microenvironment, local signal-induced tissue-specific features are tightly associated with the differentiation, homeostasis and protective funct… Show more

“…The vast majority of influenza virus-specific CD4 T cells had CD69 + CD103phenotype, which is in line with previous findings that the CD4 T RM cells usually express CD11a instead of CD103 marker (Liu et al, 2018) (Fig. 6A).…”

“…CD103, a mucosal lymphocyte surface marker integrin αEβ7, and CD69 have been widely accepted as the common markers of tissue-resident cells in mucosal and some non-mucosal tissues (Liu et al, 2018). Seven days after the second immunization, the levels of effector memory CD4 T cells expressing CD69 early activation marker were not significantly higher in the lungs of immunized mice than in those of the control group (Fig.…”

“…In addition to these differences in the structure of the epithelium, there are differences in the complexity and makeup of the microbiota at different mucosal tissue sites, which may also contribute to tissue-specific environmental differences that could affect memory CD8 T cell differentiation and function. In line with these differences between the vagina and mucosal tissues such as the gut, a possible explanation for the observed delay in canonical resident-memory differentiation is that the CVT tissue microenvironment is deficient in signals that are important for resident-memory formation and maintenance (31).…”

“…The CD44 antigen is a cell-surface glycoprotein involved in cell-cell interactions, cell adhesion, and migration [83]. The most well-studied function of CD44 is as a receptor for hyaluronic acid, a component of the extracellular matrix.…”
