Tissue Response to Titanium Implants in the Rat Maxilla: Ultrastructural and Histochemical Observations of the Bone‐Titanium Interface

Abstract: These findings indicate that ossification proceeds at different modes around the titanium implant in rat maxilla, depending on the nature of the recipient bones and the dimension of the gap between the implant and osteotomy margin.

“…Woven bone is reported to be progressively remodeled and substituted by mature bone with a trabecular structure and delimiting marrow spaces later on [50], a process that also removes bone debris and necrotized bone caused by the implant bed preparation [51]. In the present study, the remodeling was initiated by a significant loss in bone volume in the bone-healing-zone that started 10 days after screw implantation in the Control-group.…”

“…Titanium implants were placed in the upper molar socket after one month and the mechanism of osseointegration was investigated. 25) The ultrastructure of the peri-implant epithelium-titanium implant interface was also clarified by using rat maxilla implantation.…”

“…22,23 In contrast, osseointegration in human bone is achieved 3-4 months after implantation and remodeling takes place over a 1-year period under functional conditions. 1,24 Various implant designs have been used previously to study osseointegration in different experimental in vivo models.…”
