“…Early studies undertaken in the 1980s showed inflammatory cell infiltrates were not a prominent feature of painful TMJ internal derangement 8,[10][11][12] , whereas the present study demonstrated inflammatory cells in just over half the joints (54%). Later studies 7,9 , however, found inflammation in about two-thirds of the joints studied which was greater than the 54% of joints (12/22) found with inflammation in the present study ( Table 3).…”

“…Hyalinization is often considered part of the aging process where there is a marked decrease in cells and vessels that are replaced by a significant abundance of collagen 19 . When the collagen fibres have a crushed appearance it is more likely to be disease rather than age related, as found in previous studies that looked at long-standing TMJ pain 10,11 . In this study, the presence of hyalinization, particularly in the younger patients was indicative of abnormal degenerative changes in the articular disk as most specimens demonstrated a crushed appearance of the collagen fibres.…”

“…here are several possible sources of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, including alterations in the bone marrow of the mandibular condyle, osteoarthritis, [1][2][3][4][5] impingement and compression of the retrodiscal tissue, 6,7 inflammatory changes in the retrodiscal tissue, 8,9 inflammatory changes in the joint space resulting in joint effusion 10 and capsulitis. [11][12][13] Osteoarthritis is suggested as a source of pain, but is also often seen in asymptomatic subjects.…”
