Tissue marker migration after MRI‐guided breast biopsy: Migration frequency and associated factors

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and associated risk factors contributing to immediate tissue marker migration in patients undergoing MRI‐guided breast biopsy and to evaluate how often tissue marker migration altered clinical management. Between July 2010 and May 2015, we retrospectively reviewed all MRI‐guided breast biopsies at our institution for tissue marker migration. Migration was defined as final position of the tissue marker >10 mm from the target site based on the expected loc… Show more

“…Clinically significant MCD was also seen more often with MRI than US‐guided biopsies. To some extent this may also be due to the accordion effect, as like stereo/tomo biopsies, MRI‐guided biopsies are also performed with the breast in compression 12 . However, a more likely aetiological factor is the almost uniform use of large gauge VAC for MRI‐guided procedures.…”

These devices remove a much larger volume of tissue, leaving behind a biopsy cavity, 9 needle tract and possible haematoma, 13 all likely to facilitate marker movement.…”

“…이 외에도 생검을 시행한 위치가 지방 조직이 우세한 위치인 경우에도 치밀 유방에 비해 표지자의 이동이 더 빈번히 나타날 수 있다( 23 28 ). 생검을 시행한 병변의 크기가 1 cm 미만으로 작아도 조직표지자의 이동이 일어날 수 있다.…”

“…Migration of a breast lesion marker is a known complication that is most commonly associated with vacuum-assisted biopsies [ 2 ]. Significant migration may hamper the achievement of clear margins after surgical removal.…”
