“…Levels of Cu and Zn in Franciscana dolphin were similar to those previously reported by Marcovecchio et al (1990) and Gerpe et al (2002) for Argentine waters, and by Lailson-Brito et al (2002) for Brazilian waters. Besides, Law et al (1991) reported a range of active regulation of both metals in liver, being from 3-30 lg g À1 for Cu (a factor of 10) and 20-100 lg g À1 for Zn (a factor of 5), approximately.…”

“…Mercury concentration in liver, kidney and muscle from calves, juveniles and adults of Franciscana dolphins were according to those found by Gerpe et al (2002) in specimens of the same area; however hepatic concentrations were lower than those reported by Marcovecchio et al (1990), although these results were derived from only two juvenile dolphins. Liver concentrations of Hg were similar (Lailson-Brito et al, 2002) or higher (Kunito et al, 2004;de Carvalho et al, 2008;Moreira et al, 2009;Seixas et al, 2009;Di Beneditto et al, 2011) to those found in Franciscana dolphins from Brazil.…”

“…Due to their coastal and estuarine habits, Franciscana dolphins inhabit areas of great human activity, which poses threats to their conservation. Only two studies assessed Hg concentrations in Franciscana dolphins from Argentina (Marcovecchio et al, 1990;Gerpe et al, 2002) but without evaluation of the relationship with Se. This study assessed concentrations of mercury in Franciscana dolphins and evaluated possible mechanisms of mercury detoxification -MT, Se, transference to fetus and calves-in the species.…”

“…However, analyzing kidney samples of 2 franciscanas from Argentinean waters (i.e. FMA IV), Marcovecchio et al (1990) found an average cadmium concentration of 9 900 µg.kg -1 (wet wt.). Concentrations observed by the authors in Argentina were higher than those found by Lailson-Brito et al (2002) in individuals of the same species caught off Rio de Janeiro coast, since the highest renal cadmium concentration verified among 17 franciscanas analyzed in the latter study was 1 200 µg.kg -1 ww (Lailson-Brito et al, 2002).…”
