Tissue changes of extraction sockets in humans: a comparison of spontaneous healing vs. ridge preservation with secondary soft tissue healing

Abstract: This study clearly points out that an alveolar ridge preservation technique performed with collagenated porcine bone and a resorbable membrane--according to the procedure reported in this study--was able to limit the contour changes after tooth extraction. Finally, the test sites showed a better preservation of facial keratinized tissue when compared to control sites; grafted sites allowed the placement of longer and wider implants when compared to implants inserted in non-grafted sites.

“…After six weeks, bone trabeculae appeared to be in an advanced phase of mineralization; the thickening process of the trabeculae is associated with movable osteoblastic laminae (dynamic osteogenesis). The bone deposition that will be completed in 4-6 months [29][30][31]. The main consequence of tooth extraction is a significant resorption of the bony walls of the alveolar socket.…”

“…32,45,47,56 The artefacts generated from restorative dentistry, movement of the patient, partial volume averaging, incorrect selection of kVp/mA and threshold settings can affect the volume image and segmentation. 48,[57][58][59][60] In the absence of artefacts, Luu et al 45 clearly described that when defining the true boundary of an object, at best, the line for this boundary will cross directly through the centre of a voxel. At worst, when attempting to select a boundary that truly goes between voxels, one is forced to select the centre of one of the surrounding voxels.…”
