Tire Crumb Rubber Effect on Hot Bituminous Mixtures Fatigue-Cracking Behaviour

Abstract: abstract. The use of tire crumb rubber in road engineering as a modifier of bituminous mixes constitutes one of the revalorization techniques for this waste. The main objective of this research consists of analysing the possible fatigue cracking improvements in the performance of bituminous mixtures containing crumb rubber in comparison to bituminous mixtures manufactured with conventional bitumen and bitumen modified with SBS polymers. For this purpose, four different types of mixes with the same mineral skel… Show more

“…The addition of hydrated lime was found to improve the resistance of the CRM mixes to moisture damage. Moreno-Navarro et al [ 86 ] investigated the fatigue cracking potential of four different mixes with the same aggregate gradation but different binder types. It was concluded that the fatigue lives of mixes containing CR were considerably higher than those of conventional HMA.…”

“…The CRmodified bituminous binders tend to have higher viscosity, higher softening point and lower penetration in comparison with unmodified binders (Liang et al, 2015). The CR modification can improve the rheological properties of bitumen with an increase in complex modulus G* and a decrease in the phase angle, which may contribute to the fatigue and fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures (Moreno-Navarro et al, 2016;Amini and Imaninasab, 2018). Moreover, chemical treatment techniques were also adopted by researchers to prepare the CR-modified bitumen, which resulted in improved elastic recovery and showed good properties both in the lab and in the field tests (Shatanawia et al, 2013).…”

“…Figure 10 shows the macro-cracks obtained in several asphalt mixture specimens manufactured with different binders. In this research study [17], four BBTM asphalt mixtures with the same mineral skeleton, but different types of bitumen (neat, polymer modified, crumb rubber modified wet and dry process) were studied by applying the UGR-FACT test procedure. Based on the findings of this study, it is clear that the type of binder used has an important influence on the fatigue cracking damage caused in a specimen (under the same loading conditions) and therefore on the service life of asphalt mixtures.…”
