TiOxNy Thin Film Sputtered on a Fiber Ball Lens as Saturable Absorber for Passive Q-Switched Generation of a Single-Tunable/Dual-Wavelength Er-Yb Double Clad Fiber Laser

Abstract: The use of titanium oxynitride (TiOxNy) thin films as a saturable absorber (SA) element for generation of passive Q-switched (PQS) laser pulses, from a linear cavity Er-Yb double-clad fiber (EYDCF) laser, is demonstrated. Additionally, the deposition of the material as a thin film covering a fiber micro-ball lens (MBL) structure is reported for the first time. The TiOxNy coating is deposited by a direct current (DC) magnetron-sputtering technique. The MBL is inserted within the laser cavity in a reflection con… Show more

“…Coaxial powder feeding processing was adopted, and argon gas was used as the protective gas. The process parameters were optimized by the orthogonal test, and the specific values are shown in Table 2 [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. The laser cladding equipment [ 13 ] and system components are shown in Figure 1 .…”

“…Typically, the fiber ball is fabricated by a controlled electric arc discharge on the fiber tip, from the manual operation of a fusion splicer. The discharge parameters such as time and power are optimized to control the ball diameter and shape, from both single-mode and multimode fibers [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Nowadays, fusion splicers with features for special fibers fabrication, such as fiber ball lenses and tapered fibers, are currently available.…”

“…Light at different reflection angles can be partially coupled to the MBL and cause interference, justifying the use of these optical devices to extend effective coupling aperture, for example to extend the alignment tolerance of a photodiode [27]. The relationship between the angle that is formed and the distance D is shown in the following equation [17]:…”

“…In this regard, wave interference produced by rays overlapping with a phase difference also occurs in a spherical microball lens (MBL) [17]. Then, the systems' optical configuration, including the filter formed by this MBL, was reported for specific applications [17][18][19][20]. This article; presents a spectral filter for tuning laser line's wavelength generated in an EDFL.…”
