TiO2and ZnO Nanoparticles in Photocatalytic and Hygienic Coatings

Abstract: Antimicrobial paints were based on the aqueous acrylic dispersion and various nanoparticles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Antimicrobial ability and photoactivity were assumed in these paints. It was possible to observe the photoactivity thanks to change of organic dyes due to oxidative-reductive reaction. The best photocatalytic effect showed the coating containing the mixture of the first type of TiO2and nano-ZnO despite the fact that the first type of TiO2was not better in the photocatalytic test than … Show more

“…The principal source of infectious agents is the direct contact with patients, usually by the hands of healthcare workers and by the medical equipment [13]. But since the hospital environment is susceptible to be contaminated, common surfaces can act as a niche to microbes' adhesion and colonization, allowing the spread of nosocomial infections [14,15]. Those surfaces comprise room door handles, keyboards and taps, stethoscopes, ward fabrics and plastics, healthcare worker's pens and telephones [16].…”

“…For some of the traditional uses such as paints and coatings, TiO 2 NPs are incorporated into the bulk material where their tight size control provides a material with enhanced hardness, scrub resistance, and contrast ratio, storage stability and gloss [30,31]. Recently, a lot of interest attracted the application of TiO 2 NPs as photocatalyst in hygienic coatings [32].…”
