TIMP1 and MMP9 are predictors of mortality in septic patients in the emergency department and intensive care unit unlike MMP9/TIMP1 ratio: Multivariate model

Abstract: IntroductionMatrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases could be promising biomarkers for establishing prognosis during the development of sepsis. It is necessary to clarify the relationship between matrix metalloproteinases and their tissue inhibitors. We conducted a cohort study with 563 septic patients, in order to elucidate the biological role and significance of these inflammatory biomarkers and their relationship to the severity and mortality of patients with sepsis.Materials an… Show more

“…Among the enzymes secreted by leukocytes, MMPs and their inhibitors are induced and involved in this systemic inflammatory cascade [8][9][10]; particularly MMP-9 has been shown to cleave inactive TNF-alpha into its active form [11]. The MMPs and their inhibitors have been associated with mortality in organ injury [12][13][14] and sepsis [15], where serum levels of TIMP-1 and TIMP-1/MMP-9 ratios have been associated with disease severity and mortality [16][17][18].…”

“…International Sepsis De nitions 21 , which was used by seven articles. 17,[22][23][24][25][26][27] One article used the sampling of blood cultures as inclusion criterion. 28 One article included patients with symptoms of systemic infection in which PCT or blood cultures were taken within 24 hours of admission.…”

Blood sampling was performed during ED visit in all studies.…”

“…CFD and VWF are important biomarkers of acute mortality for severe sepsis (Avriel et al, 2014;Gragnano et al, 2017). TIMP1 could be used as prognostic marker for the onset of sepsis (Nino et al, 2017). Sepsis is attenuated by inhibition of ABCC4 in rats (Xia et al, 2019).…”
