Timolol Maleate in Treatment of Open Angle Glaucoma

Abstract: The effect of Timolol maleate on the intraocular pressure in open angle glaucoma has been examined in 37 patients, of these simple glaucoma in 26 (48 eyes), capsular glaucoma in 9 (14 eyes) and chronic secondary glaucoma in 2 patients (2 eyes). These cases constituded a group which was relatively difficult to manage. The average pressure reduction caused by Timolol maleate alone was about 23%. In 18 patients the intraocular pressure was adequately controlled on Timolol as the only drug and in 10 on additional … Show more

“…There have previously also been some reports on timolol response in capsulare glaucoma (Aasved et al 1979;Airaksinen 1979;Kerty et al 1979;Oksala et al 1979;Walinder 1980;Eustace 198 1 ;Takki et al 1982). They are based on a low number of treated eyes and/or a short observation period.…”

“…Numerous reports during the last years have dealt with its effect. Most of them, however, have a rather short observation period (LeBlanc 198 1 ; Takki 198 I), or the number of patients are relative small (Aasved et al 1979;Steinert et al 1981). In the present paper we discuss a three-year follow up study especially regarding the difference in timolol reponse and the need for surgery between glaucoma simplex and glaucoma capsulare.…”

“…1988). ExG has been reported to respond more poorly to medical therapy than primary open‐angle glaucoma (POAG) (Aasved 1971; Aasved et al. 1979); furthermore, the progression of visual field damage has been shown to occur more rapidly and optic nerve damage to be more pronounced (Tarkkanen 1965; Aasved 1971; Lindblom & Thorburn 1982; Konstas et al.…”

“…In Finland, 20-40% of all open-angle glaucomas have been classified as ExG (Krause 1973;Krause et al 1988). Medical therapy has been reported to be less effective in ExG than primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) (Aasved 1971;Aasved et al 1979). Furthermore, the progression of visual field damage has been shown to occur faster, and the optic nerve damage was more severe in ExG compared to POAG (Tarkkanen 1965;Aasved 1971;Lindblom & Thorburn 1982;Konstas et al 1997;Leske et al 2007).…”
