Timing of breeding, habitat preference and reproductive success of marsh harriers (Circus aeruginosus)

Abstract: During 2002-2005 we analyzed Lack's Hypothesis about the timing of the breeding of marsh harriers (Circus aeruginosus) in the Poodří Protected Landscape Area (Czech Republic). We monitored the initiation of egg laying in relation to the breeding period and preference of heterogeneous habitat. An analysis of 43 nests revealed quantitative differences. Birds which started breeding earlier, reached significantly higher reproductive success than later breeding birds regardless of nesting habitat (P = 0.003, nnests… Show more

“…For instance, average clutch size in our study was smaller than recorded in the Barycz valley in SW Poland (5.0; Witkowski 1989), similar to that reported in Finland (4.66;Cramp 1980) and in the Netherlands (4.59-4.68; Dijkstra & Zi-jlstra 1997), and larger than the average clutch size recorded in Czech Republic (4. 06-4.24;Nfmecková et al 2008). In general, clutch size is related to food conditions (Lack 1966), and one could argue that the food resource in our study population was stable during study period.…”

“…For example, the colonially nesting Little Egret ( Egretta garzetta ) and the Cattle Egret ( Bubulcus ibis ) are separated in the use of the temporal niche dimension, as the hatching time of the Little Egret peaks earlier (about 1 month) than that of the Cattle Egret (Ye et al., 2021 ). Considering that the timing of reproduction has a strong impact on the breeding success of birds (Nemecková et al., 2008 ) and that differentiation in timing plays a crucial role in species coexistence, as it is related to nest sites and food resources (Ye et al., 2019 , 2021 ), the breeding times of sympatric species using similar ecological niches should differ (Sanz‐Aguilar et al., 2015 ).…”

“…The aim of the present study was to investigate for the first-time key factors affecting the nest survival rate in Marsh Harrier in wetland habitats with varied vegetation structures and hydrological regimes. Vegetation and wetland characteristics are important factors affecting nest site selection in this species ( Stanevičius, 2004 ; Němečková, Mrlík & Drozd, 2008 ). In addition, nest site selection appears to be affected not only by nesting habitat quality but also by the presence of conspecifics using the nearby wetland as a foraging area ( Cardador, Carrete & Manosa, 2011 ).…”
