Cenozoic compressional domes have been described on the Vøring, Faroe -Shetland and Hatton margins, in the Rockall Basin (for a short summary see Kimbell et al 2016), and in the NE Greenland margin (Price & Whitham 1997;Hamann et al 2005).…”

Further thinning and growth is recognized in the early Oligocene Tuitt et al 2010), and a series of unconformities indicates a major growth period in the middle Miocene (Fig. 2c) (Boldreel & Andersen 1998;Johnson et al 2005;Stoker et al 2005a, b).…”

“…1), and has an amplitude of up to 1200 m: it was interpreted by Tuitt et al (2010) as originating in the Mid-Eocene. The Onika Anticline trends NNE with an amplitude of 800 m and is inferred to have grown during the Late Eocene (Tuitt et al 2010).…”

“…Extension during that time was generally NW-SE, leading to the initiation of sea floor spreading at ∼55 Ma (Bell and Williamson, 2002), suggesting a NW-SE oriented σ 3 during the emplacement of the Loch Scridain sills. However, the European Atlantic continental margin is host to a suite of structures that accommodated NW-SE contraction during this time, such as anticline-syncline pairs and reverse faults within the adjacent North Rockall Basin, dated to ∼59.2-28.1 Ma (Tuitt et al, 2010), and the NW-SE-striking Mull dykes (Jolly and Sanderson, 1995). Our mechanical models show that the best fit stress state for the sills involves a NW-SE σ 1 , but also favours a radial horizontal compression where φ = 0.75.…”
