Pollen preserved in caves provides a little-appreciated opportunity to study past vegetation and climate changes in regions where conventional wetland sediments are either unavailable, contain little organic matter, and/or are difficult to date accurately. Most palynology in caves has focused on clastic infill sediments, but pollen preserved in growing speleothems provides important new opportunities to develop vegetation and climatic records that can be dated accurately with radiometric methods. However, when pollen is present in speleothems, concentrations can vary by orders of magnitude, highlighting how little we know about the processes that transport pollen into caves and onto speleothem surfaces, and that determine the pollen's preservation probability. To explore these aspects of speleothem pollen taphonomy, we investigated the distribution of pollen and microscopic charcoal within several stalagmites from southwest Australia. We examined spatial patterns in pollen and charcoal preservation in order to distinguish whether observed gradients result from preservation or are products of systematic transport processes working along stalagmite surfaces. We find that pollen grains and charcoal fragments are located preferentially on the flanks of most stalagmites. This suggests that pollen grain and charcoal deposition on speleothems is influenced by transport and accumulation of detrital debris on growing surfaces. These insights will assist in future sampling campaigns focusing on speleothem pollen and charcoal contents.

The limestone formations are a unit of geological rock formations that are important for the formation of unique Karst landscapes but are often threatened by development interests, one of which is in the environment around Goa Peteng, whose existence is threatened. This research aims to investigate: 1) the conditions of limestone formations around Goa Peteng, 2) identified threats to the existence of limestone formations around Goa Peteng, and 3) potential opportunities for protecting the existence of limestone formations around Goa Peteng. The methods used in this research include field observation, literature review, and assistance with map digitization. This assistance involves utilizing literature studies, both scientific articles and reports containing maps that also cover the study location. The results of the research show that the limestone formations in the Goa Peteng environment exist at of a level of karst development in the Goa Peteng environment, which is Mesokarst and parts of the surrounding area are Non-Karst apart from that there is Exokarst Potential and Endokarst though not much exists at the study location. The real threat to the existence of the karst landscape in the Goa Peteng environment is the development of mass tourism in the form of tourist accommodation such as hotels and villas, which has developed rapidly over the last 14 years, as seen from Satellite Image data. The limestone formations in the Goa Peteng environment themselves has the opportunity to be a place for education and further studies need to be carried out on the limestone formations and karst development in South Bali.

In carbonate coastlines, karst studies have traditionally focused on reconstructing Quaternary coastal uplift and sea level oscillations. However, their potential for investigating coastal subsidence remains unexplored in regions with limited sedimentary records and scientific monitoring. In line with this, our study delved into the utility of karst research for deciphering the Quaternary evolution of the Granada coast in southern Spain—a shoreline marked by a conspicuous scarcity of records and information regarding recent tectonic movements. The current labelling data and the absence of evidence for uplift led to the hypothesis that the Granada coast may be susceptible to subsidence, though this conjecture remained unconfirmed. While submerged marine terraces were clearly identified, they were previously interpreted as consequences of sea‐level oscillations. Our multidisciplinary approach integrated karst vadose features, biostratigraphy, and the dating of 22 speleothems to address the potential uplifting or subsiding dynamics of the Granada coast. The findings indicated that the Granada coast experienced emersion between 3.5/2.4 Ma and 650 ka ago. Notably, this uplift predated similar occurrences in neighbouring coastal regions to the W and E, which occurred within the last 200–180 ka. These disparities in timing cannot be solely attributed to sea‐level fluctuations, suggesting the involvement of the tectonic activity during the Quaternary. The tectonic likely led to the emergence of the Granada coast and its karstification, followed by subsidence. Furthermore, we identified the extensional faults that caused the coastal subsidence, previously documented in studies conducted in nearby regions. However, until now, their specific impact on the Granada coast had not been comprehensively stated. In summary, our research introduces a novel application of classical karst investigations in the understanding coastal subsidence and the extensional active tectonic. By comparing vadose cave ages with established chronologies in adjacent coastal areas, this approach sheds light on the complex tectonic evolution of coastal regions.
