Timed Sollerman hand function test for analysis of hand function in normal volunteers

Abstract: This study describes the development and application of the timed Sollerman hand function test in normal volunteers and the effect of age, gender, dominance and handedness on hand function. A total of 100 volunteers (50 men and 50 women) aged between 20 to 70 years were asked to complete the Sollerman hand function test. We measured the time taken to complete the 20 tasks using seven grips. Volunteers completed the tasks a mean of 20 seconds quicker with the dominant than with the nondominant hand. Individuals… Show more

“…To perform the tasks, the patient was seated in front of the equipment that was set up on a standard office desk at a height of 71–76 cm. Each activity was timed separately (Singh et al, 2015). A spreadsheet program was written to allow continuous collection of the data and measure the time taken to complete each task.…”

“…The ranges of motion and SHFT results were compared against age and gender matched normal values in volunteers from our previous publications (Singh et al, 2012, 2015). Each patient was matched to two volunteers (1:2 ratio) in the age range 50–70 years.…”

“…Picking up coins test. The picking up coins test is a subtest in the Sollerman test 33 and is used to evaluate pinch grip function. The original test requires the person performing the test to pick up four coins of different sizes from a flat surface and to put them in a purse mounted on a wall.…”

“…The Sollerman hand function test examines the ability to perform ADL using different handgrips (Blomgren et al, 1988; Brogardh et al, 2007; Draviaraj and Chakrabarti, 2004; Lindqvist et al, 2011; Sollerman and Ejeskar, 1995). Recently, the test was modified by timing all the subtasks separately, which gives a more precise overview of hand function (Singh et al, 2015). The timed Sollerman hand function test could give more information about which tasks and grips are more difficult for patients in each study group (Singh et al, 2015).…”

The timed Sollerman hand function test could give more information about which tasks and grips are more difficult for patients in each study group (Singh et al, 2015). This knowledge could assist surgeons in making a more informed choice between these salvage procedures and help counsel patients about the effects of the two procedures on ADL.…”
