Time-varying mesh stiffness analysis of a single-roller enveloping hourglass worm gear

Abstract: As a new type of transmission, the single-roller enveloping hourglass worm gear (SEHWG) is widely used in precision mechanical transmission systems. Time-varying mesh stiffness (TVMS) is one of the most important excitations, which has great influences on the dynamic characteristics of SEHWG systems. In this paper, a model for calculating the TVMS of the SEHWG is proposed, in which bending stiffness, shear stiffness, radial compression stiffness, and foundation stiffness are considered in the worm stiffness ca… Show more

“…In contrast, the surface profile of the tooth is described accurately in the Weber theory, 410 which is another commonly used analytical method. Based on the Weber theory, the influences of tooth parameters 11 (helix angle, normal modulus), friction, 12 surface morphology, 13 roller radii, 14 crack, 1521 modified, 22 tooth profile errors, 23 lead crown relief 24 and dedendum circle fillet 25 on the TVMS are analysed. Although the surface profile of the tooth is described accurately in the Weber theory, the tooth is equivalent to a cantilever beam connected to a base circle to make the mathematical model solvable, rather than a dedendum circle, which will also result in calculation errors.…”

“…In recent years, meshing stiffness has been studied by Wang [2 ]and the lubrication flow field has been analyzed by Deng [3] , etc. Therefore, a variety of new worm drives have been derived, such as backlash double roller enveloping ring surface worm drive [4] , tilting double-roller enveloping ring surface worm drive [5 ], parallel inclined double roller enveloping ring surface worm drive [6] , roller enveloping end face meshing worm drive [7] , and so on.…”

“…In this article, a six-branch herringbone gearing system for a ship is studied. The calculation methods for stiffness and damping values are detailed by Wang et al 26,32 Table 2 lists the values of the dynamic parameters of the system, as well as the manufacturing and installation errors of each gear. The input speed of the gear Z 1 is 4000 r/min and the input power is 36000 kW.…”
