Time-varying impact of U.S. financial conditions on China's inflation: a perspective of different types of events

Abstract:
<p>In recent years, the frequency adjustment of U.S. monetary policy has a dynamic and global impact on other countries' economy. Based on the financial conditions index (FCI), the paper employs the time-varying parameter vector autoregressive model with stochastic volatility (TVP-VAR-SV) and spillover index respectively to investigate the time-varying impact of U.S. financial conditions (UFCI) on China's inflation (CINF) and its impact mechanisms. Some results are achieved as follows… Show more

“…Similar effects of the pandemic have been reported in Nigeria (Fafiolu andAlabi 2020), Egypt (Abu Hatab et al 2021), Ghana (Obese et al 2021), and Myanmar (Fang et al 2021). The impact of the pandemic has also been reported on energy supplies in China (Wu and Ma 2021) and other G7 countries (Awan et al 2021), on macroeconomic indicators such as inflation in China (Feng et al 2021), and on the supply chain for chicken feed (Attia et al 2022). In the United States and Europe-27, online shopping has increased sharply in the last decade; at the start, it accounted for only 11% of total retail trade (OECD-FAO.…”

“…Fry [ 20 ], Rousseau and Wachtel [ 21 ], Jokipii and Monnin [ 22 ] argue that the real economy has always benefited from financial development, and this benefit becomes more pronounced as degree of financial development increases. To study the time-varying impact of the U.S. financial condition index (UFCI) on inflation in China, Feng et al [ 23 ] employ a TVP-VAR model which demonstrate that the UFCI affects inflation mainly through the Chinese financial market. Matei [ 24 ] finds that when a linear relationship is imposed, financial progress only has a short-term favorable impact on economic growth.…”

“…The results show that TVP-VAR had the best robustness. Therefore, their model has been widely used in dynamic linkage between structure shocks [33]. Following the methodology of Nakajima, Kasuya and Watanabe [32], we can write the model as follows:…”
