Lagoons of West African countries are seriously threatened by rapid artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) that exposes lagoons to mercury pollution. In this study, the mercury level in the sediments of the Tendo and Aby lagoons in Côte d'Ivoire had been evaluated. A total of 87 samples from 25 stations located on Tendo and Aby lagoons were analyzed by atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The mean Hg concentrations obtained in the sediments of Tendo and Aby lagoons were 0.89 ± 0.26 mg•kg −1 and 0.70 ± 0.18 mg•kg −1 , respectively. Hg concentrations evaluated in the bays of Tendo and Aby during the dry season were 1.38 ± 0.45 mg•kg −1 and 1.07 ± 0.31 mg•kg −1 , respectively. The minimum and maximum total Hg concentrations in the sediments from 25 stations were 0.04 and 3.56 mg•kg −1 , respectively. Mercury contamination in lagoons during ASGM poses risks of pollution for the lagoon ecosystem and also poses health risks for the population living near these lagoons.

This study was conducted to understand the environmental behavior of mercury released by artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) activities. For this purpose, we attempted to assess the effect of diffused mercury on mercury concentrations in soil, demonstrate the presence of methylmercury in soil affected by the deposited mercury and determine the reactions associated with methylmercury production. The vertical profiles of mercury were obtained from two sites in the forest of the ASGM village in Pongkor (West Java, Indonesia) and from two sites in Mount Halimun-Salak National Park, which is approximately 12 km from the ASGM village. The highest total mercury concentration, 8.9 mg kg −1 , was observed for soil samples collected at the ASGM village. The mercury was concentrated at the surface or in the subsurface layers, and the concentrations were several times to more than ten times higher than the lowest values observed in the deeper layers at each site. Even in the national park, the highest concentration of 1.9 mg kg −1 was observed in the upper soil layer. These results suggest that the primary source of mercury in the forest soil is atmospheric deposition; fallen plant leaves also deliver accumulated mercury to the soil surface. The organic mercury percentages of the total mercury were 0.2 ± 0.1% for the national park and 0.3 ± 0.2% for ASGM sites. The vertical variation in organic mercury concentration did not always match that in total mercury concentration, which suggested that the formation of methylmercury in soil was closely related to the decomposition of organic matter near the surface. The soil surface is an important reaction field for methylmercury production in forested areas.

Small-scale gold mining activities are still mostly carried out in various regions in Indonesia. The use of mercury (Hg) in the process of extracting gold from sediments can be a source of pollution for aquatic ecosystems and organisms. The aim of this study was to analyze the macrozoobenthos community structure in the Cikondang River which was affected by Hg pollution due to small-scale gold mining. Sampling was carried out by survey method at 5 sampling points along the Cikondang River from upstream to downstream. Water quality parameters measured include temperature, transparency, current velocity, pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Hg concentrations in sediments and macrozoobenthos were measured using automatic mercury analyzer. The results showed that the concentration of Hg in sediments in the Cikondang River ranged from 0.63–52.48 mg/kg and the accumulation of Hg in macrozoobenthos ranged from 0.97 to 0.98. The macrozoobenthos diversity index was 1.50-2.17 and the dominance index was 0.16-0.30. The most group of macrozoobenthos found was from the Gastropod class, followed by the Insecta and Malacostraca classes. Macrozoobenthos in the Cikondang River were only found in the downstream of the river, at Sampling Points 4 and 5 only. This showed that Hg pollution in the Cikondang river is highly toxic, caused macrozoobenthos was not found at Sampling Point 1, 2 and 3.
