Time trends and projected obesity epidemic in Brazilian adults between 2006 and 2030

Abstract: We examined time trends and projected obesity epidemic in Brazilian adults between 2006 and 2030 by sex, race/skin color, educational attainment, and state capitals. Self-reported body weight and height of 730,309 adults (≥ 18 years) from the Vigitel study were collected by telephone interview between 2006 and 2019. A multinomial logistic regression model was used to predict the prevalence of body mass index (BMI) categories as a function of time by 2030. The prevalence of obesity increased from 11.8% in 2006 … Show more

“…In Brazil, data from a large national survey (Vigitel) demonstrates that between 2006 and 2019, obesity increased from 11.8% to 20.3%, an average increase of 0.6% a year, a trend observed in both sexes and across all age groups and educational levels. However, a slightly higher increase of obesity prevalence was observed among women in comparison to men during this period (8.8% increase for women vs 8.1% increase for men) 4 .…”

“…Global data on the prevalence of class III obesity is limited, however existing data suggests that rates of class III obesity are continuing to grow. [37][38][39] In addition, our estimate for participation rate of adults with class III obesity was only calculated using studies that included any participants with class III obesity. As noted previously, 75 additional studies were excluded based on a lack of participants with class III obesity.…”
