Time to Diagnostic Evaluation After Mammographic Screening in an Urban Setting

Abstract: At the CBCC, time to patient follow-up after initial mammographic screening is within the CDC-recommended performance standard of less than 60 days. For a population that historically has low rates of clinical follow-up, we attribute this reduction in delays to breast cancer diagnostic resolution to a culturally sensitive patient navigation program. Additional studies are needed to assess how the existing navigation program can be individualized/tailored to target the remaining 20% of women who did not adhere … Show more

“…Capital Breast Care Center serves as a safety net for under and uninsured and medically underserved women residing in DC, Maryland and Virginia. 20 All women presenting for screening have their information prospectively collected and entered into the Electronic Medical Record system (EMR). Variables collected include demographic data (including age, race, ethnicity, education level, and reproductive history) and insurance status.…”

“…From a recent publication of CBCC data, Oppong et al showed that the time from an abnormal finding to a diagnostic resolution for patients screened through this PN program fall within the guidelines set by the CDC-funded National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. In addition, among the women w'ho were recommended to have a core needle biopsy after the diagnostic screening, 132 (81.5%) underwent biopsy within a median of 21 days (interquartile range: 0–221 days) [14]. …”

“…6 This success is to be celebrated. The District of Columbia set a goal of decreasing breast cancer mortality by 10% by 2020 11 A modeling study using data from DC showed that continuing screening at current intervals and ensuring quality treatment is received should help DC meet this goal.…”

“…The article examined the interval to diagnosis after an abnormal mammogram for women receiving patient navigation services through CBCC. 6 Oppong et al found that from 2010 to 2012, just less than 10% of women who received screening mammograms through CBCC were recommended to have additional follow-up; 80% of those who were recommended for follow-up returned for diagnostic imaging within a median of 39 days. Of the 162 women recommended for biopsy, 81.5% received the biopsy within a median of 21 days.…”
