Time perception and illness acceptance among remitting-relapsing multiple sclerosis patients under treatment

Abstract: Avoiding contemplation of negative past and concentrating on hedonistic future constitute significant predictors of illness acceptance. These results may be of importance in terms of holistic approach to treatment of RR-MS patients. In the initial stage of the disease progression, patients might benefit from psychological support due to change in temporal orientation.

“…Our own studies have shown that the mean score for the whole group of MS patients was 24.83, which coincides with the results obtained by Pejas-Grzybek et al [30]. In Król et al study [31], it appears that acceptance of disease in MS patients has a strong positive relationship with subjective physical efficiency assessment and moderate positive association with subjective mental efficiency assessment, that found confirmation in the results of own study, where the acceptance of the disease positively correlated with the quality of life in the somatic and mental domains. Evaluation of disease acceptance among MS patients should be an integral part of the therapeutic process, because the patient's reconciliation with the disease allows to reduce the negative feelings [17,18] and fear [32], as well as more effective control of the course of the disease [12] and thus improve the quality of life [11,[13][14][15].…”

“…Therefore we find this result rather surprising. Also disease duration, which in the study of patients with COPD (Jankowska-Polańska et al, 2016b), hypertension (Baczewska et al, 2015) and multiple sclerosis (Król, Szcześniak, Koziarska, & Rzepa, 2015) was a significant predictor of illness acceptance (shorter time since the diagnosis correlated with better acceptance), here turned out to be insignificant. Demographic variables (age, place of residence, education, income, having children) were also insignificant.…”

“…In a study involving 54 patients with RRMS, Król et al show that focusing on a positive future, rather than dwelling on negative past events, can enable disease acceptance and conclude that psychological support may benefit PwMS in the early stages of disease progression. 28…”
