Time of Root Pruning Influences Vegetative Growth, Fruit Size, Biennial Bearing, and Yield of `Jonathan' Apple

Abstract: `Jonathan'/M.26 apple (Malus domestics Borkh.) trees were root-pruned annually on two sides, 60 cm from the trunk, to a depth of 40 cm for 6 years while dormant, at bloom, or in mid-June. Root pruning reduced terminal shoot growth by ≈30% in 1985-89 with no influence in 1990. Cumulative yield was reduced by root pruning at bloom (14%) or mid-June (20%), and cumulative yield efficiency [kg·cm-2 trunk cross-sectional area) was reduced by root pruning with n… Show more

“…In several long-term experiments the main objective of RP, the reduction of shoot growth, was only reached in some years but not in others, or was not achieved at all (Elfving et al, 1991;Ferree, 1992;Autio and Greene, 1994;Miller, 1995).…”

“…However, the extent of these side-effects may also vary considerably and can not be predicted with reliable accuracy (e.g., Schupp and Ferree, 1988;Ferree, 1992;Mika and Krzewinska, 1995;Baab, 2000;Hilbers, 2004). This applies also to some desirable side-effects of RP, such as improved flower-bud formation (Khan et al, 1998), reduced pre-harvest fruit drop (Schupp and Ferree, 1989;Autio and Greene, 1994), increased dry-matter content (Mika and Krzewinska, 1995;Schupp and Ferree, 1988), increased Ca content of the fruits (Schupp and Ferree, 1987;Vercammen, 1996;Baab, 2000) or reduced incidence of bitter pit (Schumacher et al, 1978).…”

Knee 1997).…”
