Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry of a Range of Coal Samples: A Chemometrics (PCA, Cluster, and PLS) Analysis

Abstract: This paper documents time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analyses of 34 different coal samples. In many cases, the inorganic Na + , Al + , Si + , and K + ions dominate the spectra, eclipsing the organic peaks. A scores plot of principal component 1 (PC1) versus principal component 2 (PC2) in a principal components analysis (PCA) effectively separates the coal spectra into a triangular pattern, where the different vertices of this pattern come from (i) spectra that have a strong inorganic … Show more

“…For these data, we applied Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which is an orthogonal transformation that projects a set of observations onto linearly uncorrelated variables denoted as principal components, allowing one to highlight similarities and differences within the dataset (Pei et al, 2008). Each mass spectrum has been represented by a set of values corresponding to the integrated area of selected mass peaks, including a number of 26, 33, and 67 confidently identified compounds for SPI L2MS, negative and positive polarity SIMS, respectively.…”

“…The hot/cold stage on our ToF‐SIMS instrument allowed us to demonstrate that fluorine removal does not take place from samples when they are heated under vacuum, while fluorine removal does take place readily in the air at 150–300 °C. A chemometric, principal component analysis (PCA) of the negative ion ToF‐SIMS data differentiated the samples according to their expected chemistries. PCA is often an appropriate statistical analysis tool for comparing series of SIMS spectra because of the high degree of correlation that often exists between the signals within them.…”

“…In their past work, Linford et al . have emphasized the importance of using more than one chemometrics tool to analyze complex data sets . That is, if two different statistical/mathematical algorithms provide similar results, the likelihood that the results are meaningful is higher than if only one technique is employed.…”
