The electron drift velocity, mean energy, ionization, attachment, effective ionization coefficient, limit electrical field, and synergism of pure CHF3 (fluoroform), pure CF4 (tetrafluoromethane), and CHF3+CF4 gas mixtures are calculated by Boltzmann equation analysis in a wide range of density normalized electrical fields (E/N). The finite difference method is used to solve the two-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation under steady-state Townsend conditions. To our knowledge, no previous electron swarm parameters of these mixtures have been published. At constant E/N values, the electron mean energies and drift velocities increase with decreasing CHF3 content. The addition of CF4 into the mixture increases the attachment coefficient but reduces the ionization coefficient since CF4 is more electronegative than CHF3. Furthermore, the limit electrical fields increase with increasing CF4 concentration.

The electron swarm parameters, namely electron mean energy, drift velocity, effective ionization coefficient and limiting values of number density reduced electric fields, E/N, are calculated in CF 4 +Ar mixtures for various CF 4 concentrations that vary from 2 to 100% over a range of E/N from 50Td to 600Td by solving Boltzmann's equation. In this study Boltzmann's equation was solved using finite difference method under steady-state Townsend condition. One of the most important results of this study indicated that at higher E/N values inelastic processes due to argon began to control the swarm energy thus leading this binary mixture act essentially like pure argon.Index Terms -Gas discharges, CF 4 , argon, electron swarm parameters.

In this paper we describe the anisotropic velocity distribution function of the electron swarm in weakly ionized gases from the three-term spherical harmonic expansion technique of the Boltzmann equation, and a method for solving the coupled integro-differential equations for the electron distribution functions. In the method for solving the equations, we employ a numerical technique using the implicit Gear's algorithms. Important advantages of using such a numerical technique in the present system are efficiency to solve the stiff equations stably, and appropriateness for obtaining a solution of the equations with poor initial conditions. This analysis is applied to the steady-state electron swarm in helium. Comparative calculation with the conventional two-term Lorentz approximation shows that, not only at high E/N, but even at low E/N, subject to almost spherically symmetric velocity distribution, this procedure gives the results with sufficient accuracy. Also the swarm characteristics in helium are discussed from a viewpoint of the anisotropic velocity distributions.
