Time of day and caffeine influence some neuropsychological tests in the elderly.

Abstract: We report that performance on neuropsychological tests used in the diagnosis of dementia can be influenced by external factors such as time of day (TOD) and caffeine. This study investigates TOD effects on cognitive performance in the elderly. The optimal TOD at which an individual is at their maximal arousal alters with age and in the elderly typically occurs in the morning. Neuropsychological test scores from healthy elderly participants were analysed to determine whether TOD affected performance. Interactio… Show more

“…Surprisingly few studies, however, have shown that caffeine actually improves memory performance (Capek and Guenther, 2009; Borota et al, 2014; for review see: Nehlig, 2010), and even fewer studies have considered how caffeine interacts with time of day (Ryan et al, 2002; Walters and Lesk, 2015). In a previous study, we considered whether caffeine could overcome the well-documented decrease in memory performance among older adults during the late afternoon, when most older adults experience their circadian low point (for review see: May et al, 1993; Intons-Peterson et al, 1998; Hasher et al, 2005).…”

“…The methods of data collection, tests used, inclusion criteria and procedure are described in detail there [7]. In the present study, the aim is specifically to investigate whether prior caffeine and age influence performance on the same battery of cognitive tests.…”
